I, Andrea Bokelman, live and work in Cape Town, South Africa. 

 

I am a marketing and advertising professional who has worked as a media planner for 20 years.  It's my day job to get products and services seen by those who could benefit from them.

 

Creating art is my passion and therapy.

Artists on social media and YouTube inspired me to learn and experiment with non-traditional techniques with modern water-based paints.  I've been fascinated with the chemistry of paints and mediums which leads to expected and unexpected paint reactions and results.

 

I'm cognizant to not be wasteful in my artistic practice.  I've found that I often get better results when I work without the fear of 'wasting' art supplies or don't fear 'messing up'.  I've developed ways to reimagine a 'failed' piece into something new.

 

I'm finding my balance between expressive and precise painting. Simplicity versus depth and detail.  Intuition and flow versus planning and control.

 

I create imperfect paintings that aim to be ‘oddly satisfying’.

Furthermore, I believe we should return to the Renaissance's mission for art which is that art is for beauty, truth and wisdom.  Art is personal and universal, particular and general.
